David H. Halsey

Born April 1, 1935, in Maben WV, at the time of his death, David was living in Windsor, CO, with his wife, Ellen. An idyllic childhood provided familial love and support while allowing freedom to roam the hills of Appalachia fostering the genius mind and dynamic person that was David Harold Halsey. The son of a coal miner, David was the oldest of six children including Richard, Edna, Margaret (deceased), Helen and Sidney. A lifelong journey driven by curiosity and passion for science and engineering began as a youth in a one room schoolhouse, subsequently graduating from Mullens HS, and earning a scholarship to attend Marshall College/ University in Huntington WV. Later he was inducted into the Mullens HS Hall of Fame. Despite starting his college curriculum with courses like “bone head” English, David would achieve his childhood dreams of flying military aircraft and becoming a professional engineer by his mid-twenties upon graduating from Marshall University and the ROTC program. A results-oriented mindset of achievement and leadership by example delivered a prestigious civilian career of over 35 years in the Department of the Interior. David took pride in his service to his country for 30+ years, retiring as a Colonel in The US Army. David was father to four children – Derek, Douglas (deceased), Sheridan, and Jason Halsey; grandfather to 8, which deemed him the title of “G-Dave”, and great grandfather to 2. His commitment to family was evident. The annual Halsey and Acord family reunions in Twin Falls State Park, the family gatherings in Woodstock VA, and all the holiday celebrations with friends and family throughout the years became tradition and will be remembered by many. A published author, writing on a range of subjects from Halsey genealogy and “hillbilly” childhood tales to theoretical physics, David harbored a genius mind, ultimately motivating and encouraging others to follow their curious passions in a quest to learn and discover. He will be remembered for his easy-going personality, his sense of humor, his determination, and his love for family. His character, reputation, and the life he led will continue to set an example for others. A celebration of life is being planned at Twin Falls State Park, WV, on July 14, 2024.
