Eugene Robert Schmidt

Eugene Robert "Bud" Schmidt, 88, passed away on October 31, 2014 at Poudre Valley Hospital. He was born in Illinois on July 7, 1926 and married Elizabeth "Betty" Lacy on September 8, 1950. The Schmidt's lived in Harvard, Illinois, Phoenix, Arizona, Canoga Park, California, Bremerton, Washington, Brawley, California, Valencia, California, Tucson, Arizona and Fort Collins, Colorado. Bud and Betty began their career together growing geraniums in a self-built greenhouse operation in Illinois. Bud then became an executive for the Boy Scouts of America and served in districts in Illinois, Arizona, California and Washington. In Arizona, Bud and Betty owned a retail store in Scottsdale and became interested in the craft of ceramics. While Bud was serving with the Boy Scouts in California, he and Betty became interested in creating dollhouse miniatures in ceramics and developed a wholesale and retail business that replaced Bud's job with the Boy Scouts and allowed them to travel to trade shows throughout the Southwest and Texas. The pair retired from that business and moved to Fort Collins to be near their youngest son. In the Fort Collins area, they lived in several retirement homes finally settling in the Good Samaritan Fort Collins Village. Bud showed his faith in God as a member of the Lutheran Church. His involvement with the Boy Scouts was driven by his firm belief in the concepts of the Boy Scout pledge: being trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and kind. Bud's genius with shop machinery helped make Bud and Betty's miniatures unique and widely collected. In later years he enjoyed keeping up with the news, playing solitaire on his iPad and the taste of sangria. Bud is survived by his sister, Elaine Bradley of Washington, Illinois; wife, Elizabeth and his son, Tim Schmidt and daughter-in-law, Jonie Fidek Schmidt of Fort Collins, Colorado; his son, Kenneth Schmidt and daughter-in-law, Robin Schmidt of Onalaska, Washington; his son, Andrew Schmidt and daughter-in-law, Deah Sperling-Schmidt of Huntington Beach, California; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jenna, Erin and Kaitlin and their families.
