Dory and Rudy Younger

Doris (Dory) Ann Younger (Schumitsch), 84, of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away on August 4, 2020. Dory was born December 24th, 1935, in Antigo, Wisconsin, where she was the first of three girls after five boys. Dory had a childhood filled with family, love and plenty of hard work. She started school at the one room Ferndale school, which she always had very fond memories of. Dory loved being in the marching band in high school and played the clarinet, which she picked up again in later years, playing in the community band in Madras Oregon. After high school, Dory went to business school, and then in 1955 married Rudy Younger, who was in the Air Force and stationed in Antigo at the time they met. They loved the experience of Rudy’s twenty year career in the Air Force, and were able to live in Germany and travel Europe for three years. Before having children, Dory worked at secretarial jobs to help make ends meet. Their daughter Bonny was born in Key West, Florida in 1965, and son Mark was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1970. When Rudy retired from the Air Force, the family moved to Madras, Oregon, where Dory and Rudy raised their family and were active members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. They loved living in Madras and lived there for the next forty years. Dory and Rudy moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 2014 to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, when health issues started to become difficult to manage. Dory spent many years as the Director of Community Education for Central Oregon Community College, and later enjoyed working as the church secretary for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madras Oregon. She taught catechism at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and wrote and directed the yearly Christmas pageants for the students. Three of her plays were later published by C.S.S. Publishing Company for use in parishes across the country. She taught community education classes in writing for COCC, and wrote various newspaper and church articles as well. Dory sang in the church choir for many years, and also played the piano for the choir for several years. Dory was talented and creative. She was an avid gardener, and delighted in raising flowers and vegetables all her life. She was a talented painter, and once had a gallery show displaying and selling her watercolors. Dory was an avid reader, a fabulous cook who loved to try new recipes, loved to travel and sight see, and loved her country, the military, flowers, babies and the stars. Dory remained active in her church all her life. She adored her family and had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren. Dory remained very close to her brothers and sisters, and was beloved by all her family and her friends. She was generous, compassionate, a great friend, wife, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother, and was kind to everyone she met. She is dearly loved and missed. Dory is survived by her daughter, Bonny Gainley; son-in-law, Glenn Gainley; son, Mark; grandsons, T.J. Gainley (Caroline) and Dusty Gainley (Ashley), and granddaughter, Sydney Gainley. She has three great-grandchildren, Clare, Morgan and Lilly Gainley. She is also survived by her brother, Art Schumitsch and sisters, Louise Korth (Louis) and Pat McCarry (Randy), and many nieces and nephews. Dory was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy, her parents, Frank and Irma Schumitsch; brothers, Elsworth, Gilbert, Robert and Donald. A service will be held for both Rudy (who passed away March 25th) and Dory at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Wednesday September 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time, with internment following. Rudolph Conrad Younger (Rudy), 85, of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away on March 25, 2020, after a long and valiant fight with Parkinson’s disease. Rudy was born on September 11, 1934, in New Camp, Kentucky, to a coal mining family, where he was the youngest of five boys, and also had a younger sister. Though all the men in the family worked in the coal mines and money was scarce, it was a childhood filled with family and love, with older brothers always ready to push him in sports. Rudy was a talented athlete in every sport he tried, and especially enjoyed basketball and baseball in high school. He and his brothers had a band and worked nightclubs to earn money, with Rudy on the drums. After high school, Rudy enlisted in the Air Force, which was to be a twenty year career. While stationed in Antigo, Wisconsin, Rudy met the love of his life, Doris Schumitsch, and married her in 1955. Rudy and Dory loved the military life, and were able to live in Germany and travel Europe for three years. Their daughter Bonny was born in Key West, Florida in 1965, and son Mark was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1970. Rudy did tours in Korea and Viet Nam earning many military accolades, and retired a Major in 1973. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Rudy went into banking and became a loan officer. The family moved to Madras, Oregon, where Dory and Rudy raised their family and were active members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. They loved living in Madras and lived there for the next forty years. Rudy and Dory moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 2014 to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, when health issues started to become difficult to manage. Rudy loved to play golf, and had a very low handicap. He played around the state and often won tournaments. Rudy could fix anything, and had a shop full of every tool and gadget imaginable. Rudy was active in his church, often attended high school sporting events, and was a good friend to people in the community. Rudy adored his family and was a devoted friend, and gave those he loved the gift of knowing that no matter what, he would always be there for them. He was generous, patriotic and had tremendous integrity. He is dearly loved and missed. Rudy is survived by his wife Dory, daughter Bonny Gainley, son-in-law Glenn Gainley, son Mark, grandsons T.J. Gainley (Caroline) and Dusty Gainley (Ashley), and granddaughter Sydney Gainley. He had three great-grandchildren, Clare, Morgan and Lilly Gainley. He is also survived by his brother Joe Younger, sister Betty Stone (Dean), and his uncle John Younger (Helen), and many nieces and nephews. Rudy was preceded in death by his parents Steve and Elizabeth Younger, brothers Steve (Una), Gene (Pat) and George, and sister in law Betty Jean. A service will be held for both Rudy and Dory (who passed away August 4th) at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Wednesday September 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time, with internment following.
