William Bill Lindgren was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Wadena, Minn. The family moved to Henning in 1928 and settled in Minneapolis in 1933. He graduated from Washburn H.S. in 1944. At age 5, while passing a public library, he asked his father if he could become a librarian. His father agreed. Bill received his B.S. in history in 1947 and M.S. in library science in 1948 from the University of Minnesota. He was a cataloger at the University of Oregon in Eugene 1948-1950 and 1953-1954. In 1951-52 he served with the U.S. Army Engineers in Korea. In June 1954 he returned to the University of Minnesota to earn an M.S. in Economic History. He cataloged for the University of Arizona library from 1955-60 and organized the Catalog Department at CSC later CSU and headed it from 1960 to 1988, when he retired. He was a life member of both the American Library Association and the Colorado Library Association and served as treasurer and on many committees. At age 8, he built a crystal set radio and maintained his interest in the media and classical music. He listened to music from all across the world with a shortwave radio and later on the computer. In June 1961 he met Kay Howard at the CSU Library, and they married in June 1962 in Danforth Chapel at CSU. They enjoyed traveling in the United States, Great Britain and Europe. Bill went on more than 10 Elderhostels. He was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Church, serving as Treasurer in several churches including Foothills Unitarian in Fort Collins. He is survived by his wife, Kay; son, Paul of Wheat Ridge; daughter, Lisa Ann Hawkes of Castle Eaton, England; and niece, Tricia Davidson of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Lindgren; and sisters, Ione Karlson and Joanne Davidson. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday at The Foothills Unitarian Church, 1815 Yorktown Ave. The Rev. Marc Salkin will officiate.
