Toby Cortez Sr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the age of 94.
Born on August 4th, 1930, in Turkey Creek, Colorado, Toby lived a long and full life defined by family, friendship, and a deep love for God. He married the love of his life, Melinda Salazar, on August 14th, 1949, and together they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, resilience, and devotion.
Toby was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his children: sons Toby Cortez Jr. (Wife, Tammy) and Ralph Cortez, both of Wellington; and daughters Lucy Naomi Wilson (Husband, Ralph) and Beverly Cortez (Husband, Sam), both of Fort Collins. He was a proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, great-grandfather to 19, and great-great-grandfather to 5. Each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Toby was preceded in death by his beloved wife Melinda; his parents, Aaron Cortez and Lucinda Medina; his brothers, John Cortez Sr and Benny Cortez Sr; his sisters, Mary Smith and Ida Villarreal; his daughter Molly Anne "Josie" Arellano; his daughter-in-law Judy Cortez and two cherished great-grandsons, Daniel James Moreno and Angel Piña.
He retired from a long and respected career with the City of Fort Collins Streets Department, but he never truly slowed down. Toby was an avid hunter and fisherman, always happiest in the mountains, around a campfire or lake with his loved ones. He enjoyed sharing drinks and stories with friends at the local bar, often the life of the party with a sharp wit and infectious laugh.
He was also known for his green thumb. His lawn was the pride of the neighborhood, and his flower beds bloomed with as much vibrance as his personality.
Toby Cortez Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength. He will be remembered not only for his storytelling and sense of humor, but for the deep love he gave to his family and friends. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, loyalty, and joy in the simple things.
He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
