Listen to Obituary
With broken hearts and loving memories, the Smith family announces our newest angel in heaven, Shirley Virginia Hatten Smith. Known as "Mother," "Granny," and "G.G.," Shirley passed away after complications from surgery on May 10. A proud Fort Collins native, Shirley was born on Nov. 30, 1926 to Walter Hatten and Sarah Shepard Hatten, and graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1944. She and Donald Zane Smith married on March 2, 1946. Shirley devoted her life to her husband, four children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Although she spent her entire life in Fort Collins, Shirley enjoyed many trips, cruises, and adventures. She was an active member of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Pioneer Association, and Antique Automobile Club - where she took great pride in showing off her Ford Phaeton and 1976 Volkswagen convertible. Through the years, Shirley knit hundreds of baby hats for newborns at Poudre Valley Hospital, and created exquisitely designed baptismal quilts for St. Luke's. Shirley treasured her friends and the time she spent with them at their bi-weekly pinochle luncheons and monthly Fort Collins High School class luncheons. She bowled with several bowling leagues and exhibited her style and creativity as she knitted, sewed, and mended for her family. Shirley is survived by her children, Linda Smith Ingram Bill, Loveland, Colo.; Ronald Zane Smith Sandee, Wellington, Colo.; Steven Oren Smith Janet, Fort Collins; and Robert Mark Smith, Fort Collins. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Angie Bill, Jason Bianca, Jen, Sarah, Evan, Amanda Jake, and Katelyn; and her great-grandchildren, Daniel, Jarrett, Chad, Jaylee, Emmalin, Macy, and Sydney. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Don; daughter-in-law, Pamela; and nine brothers and sisters. Shirley's family asks that you join them in a celebration of her life Tuesday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Stover St. in Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or Poudre Valley Hospital "BABY HATS," through Bohlender Funeral Chapel.
