Sarah Hicks

Joined her eternal family on May 14, 2007, at the age of 91. She was born in Wellington on Feb. 4, 1916, to James Silbert "Seeb" Hagans and Luciena Mae Rogers. As did many of the children of her era, she worked with her family in the beet fields, helped her father with the harvest of his truck garden and worked with him in the cherry and apple orchards in Fort Collins and Wellington. During World War II, she worked for United Airlines at the Modification Center in Cheyenne, Wyo. Because she was so small, she could crawl on the inside of the wings to the end of the wings of the bombers and wire them, making them combat ready, before their departure to Europe. At the age of 13, she met Harold Hicks, who was then 16, at a dance in Loveland. Sixteen years later, they married on April 24, 1945. They had a son, Darrell; and a daughter, Deanna. To say she was devoted to her family is an understatement. There was nothing more important to her. With every new baby born to the family, she rejoiced and loved each deeply. Her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchildren were beneficiaries of that love and returned it in full measure. She is survived by her son, Darrell; and daughter, Deanna, both of Fort Collins; three grandchildren, Sean Sandy of Greeley, Paula of Pueblo and Jeffrey of Fort Collins; four great-grandchildren, Brad Givens, Seattle, Alissa Jiron, Pueblo, Stephanie and Alan Hicks, both of Greeley; and two great-great-grandchildren, Isaiah Lucero and Jordyn Gonzalez, both of Pueblo. She is survived as well by a number of nieces and nephews, many of whom lived with her and Harold when they needed a helping hand or a place to stay. Our family is especially grateful to Barbara Cansler, her home care aide, who for five years with great compassion, took such special care of her "Sarah." Preceding her in death and welcoming her home with them are her mother and father; her husband, Harold; her daughter-in-law, Margie; two brothers; two sisters; and many, many friends. What a reunion this must be! A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Father Roger Lascelle will officiate at the services. Those who desire may view Mrs. Hicks from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bohlender Funeral Chapel.
