Sandra Marie Cornell Carson, known to friends and family as Sandy, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was 78 years old. Surrounded by her husband and children at her bedside, she departed this life following complications due to dementia.
Born on February 5, 1948, in Maryville, Missouri, to Charles Wesley Cornell Jr. and Marcia Jean Martin, and growing up in Bedford, Iowa, Sandy cultivated a life defined by devotion to family and a love for the arts and sports. After spending her senior year of high school in Lincoln, Nebraska, she moved to Lawrence, Kansas, a city that would hold great significance in her life story. It was there that she attended the University of Kansas, earning a Master's degree in Music Education, and where she met her life-long husband and father of her children, David Eugene Carson.
Though she held a graduate degree and was actively pursuing a doctorate in music education at KU, after her move to Fort Collins Colorado in the summer of 1989, Sandy chose to devote herself wholeheartedly to the role she cherished most, that of mother. Sandy created a warm and supportive home. She was a steadfast partner to David, frequently entertaining his customers and supporting his career with grace. However, her proudest accomplishment was raising her three sons: Kyle, Corey, and Robert. She was a strong, constant presence in their lives, rarely missing a sporting or arts event during their childhoods and encouraging them to live full, meaningful lives as adults.
Sandy was a woman of diverse talents and intellect. A dedicated musician, her goal was to become proficient in every instrument she touched, as opposed to mastering one. She spent her spare time dedicated to her love for playing Bridge and her passion for genealogy, through which she meticulously chronicled her family's history.
Sandy is survived by her devoted husband, David Eugene Carson; her three sons, Kyle David Carson, Corey Michael Carson, and Robert Cornell Carson; and her beloved grandchildren, River Laughery Carson, Autumn Kai Carson, Weston Henry Carson, Meadow Rayne Carson, and Christine Lynn Carson. She is also survived by her sister, Krisha Laura Hunnicutt, and her husband, Gary. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marcia Cornell.
