Ruth K. "Honey" Knox, 93, of La Porte, Colorado, died on Good Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Columbine Care Center West of natural causes. She was born May 2, 1915 in Roodhouse, Illinois to Mark Ward, and Vera King. She grew up and attended high school there where she met her life long mate Gerald W. Knox. They were married on March 4, 1935 and promptly set out to establish their new life together in Manitou Springs, Colorado. They co-owned and operated a horse stable at 1000 S. Colorado Blvd. in Denver for a many years with her husband's parents. They gave birth to three sons while in the Denver area and informally adopted one other son, Johnny Petzoldt during his teenage years until he went to military service. In 1954 they sold the horse stables to a commercial business firm then bought the family farm and moved permanently to La Porte. Her husband's parents followed them to La Porte and bought the farm across Hwy 287 to be close to the grandkids. Her husband's failing health was always a concern and she made the career change from devoted wife and mother to working for the Poudre R1 School District for approximately 22 years. Her husband died at the age of 54 in 1969. She never remarried and lived alone and took care of the family farm in La Porte. In 1960 she was a cook in the La Porte school cafeteria. She was hired as the school secretary at Cache La Poudre Junior High School in 1965 and remained at that job for the next 17 years where she "broke in" and worked with several principals during that tenure. Besides the love for and pride in her family, her most proud achievement was the service to the kids of CLP JR High. While all of her family and most close friends called her "Honey", there were thousands of Jr. High kids that she cared for called her "MOM". She is survived by her brother Mark Ward King Jr., two sons and wives Gary K. and Elaine Knox of Wellington; Patrick M. and Beverly Knox of Chugiak, Alaska; daughter in law Charla Knox of Aurora. She was preceded in death by her Husband Gerald W Knox; son William Ward Knox; sisters Eleanor Briggs and Deloris Kerr. She has 11 grandchildren: Steve, Scott, Brian and William Jr. Knox, Gerri Ann Hobby, Sherri Lynn Knott, Mike Knox, Dan Knox, Trisha Knox, Crystal Knox and Troy O'Shay Knox. She also has 15 great grandchildren. The Knox Family would like to invite friends to share the Celebration of Life gathering Monday night April 13, 2009 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Tapestry House Event Center, 3212 North Overland Trail in La Porte. If you have any fond remembrances or stories to tell of your relationship with Honey, we would appreciate you sharing these with all that attend the gathering. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Larimer County, 305 Carpenter Rd, Ft. Collins, CO 80525.
