Roy Lionel Stienmier

March 6, 1940 — February 12, 2017

Listen to Obituary
Roy L. Stienmier passed away on February 12, 2017 after battling complications from cancer.

Roy was born March 6, 1940 in the heart of the Rocky Mountains - his first true love. The quintessential Colorado native, he would spend the next nearly 77 years as a living example of his beloved Colorado no matter where life took him and his only other true loves - Carolyn, and their children Kathryn and David.

Roy grew up in the small mining community of Gilman, Colorado. He was a typical, cantankerous young man who developed a love for hunting, fishing, backpacking, four wheeling, motorcycling, and of course skiing! So that he and his siblings could graduate from an accredited high school, the family moved to Boulder in 1954 and Roy graduated from Boulder High School in 1958. Upon graduation, Roy attended Colorado State University where he earned a degree in Geology in 1962. It was at CSU that he met and married Carolyn - who would tell you that he danced her legs off on their first date!

After two years in the United States Army, Roy returned to Ft. Collins and began work with Ideal Cement Company (now known as LafargeHolcim). Roy was blessed to spend an entire career with the same company doing work that he loved! He retired in 2003.

To know Roy was to know Colorado -- the sheer size of his heart can be matched only by the tallest of fourteeners. His loyalty was as dependable as a blizzard in March. His sense of humor was much like skiing high country terrain -- wild, rugged and untamable. If truth be told, it was often steep and deep. As those who were on the receiving end of one of his zingers can attest -- Roy was a big fan of "skiing" out of bounds! His canyon sized laugh and the accompanying trademark twinkle in his eye and will be sorely missed.

Roy is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter Kathryn Davidson (Rex); son David (Cass) and granddaughter Lucy Kate; and sister Jane Gilman of Boulder and their hairy children, Koda and Kacy (nee "Pork Chop").

A brief graveside service will be held at Grandview Cemetery in Ft. Collins on March 20 at 1:30.

Following the service, a celebration of Roy's life will be held at C. B. & Potts 1441 E. Horsetooth Road (at Collindale Golf Course) from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mountain Vista Golf Course, 2808 N. Frontage Rd., Ft. Collins, CO 80524. A youth golf instruction scholarship has been established there.
