Robert D. Trethewey was born on November 1, 1946, in Greeley, Colorado to Dr. Robert and Marge Trethewey. Rob grew up in Loveland, Colorado with his younger brother, Jack Trethewey. According to Rob's dad (fondly known as Dr. Bob or Doc), Rob was a very good kid. When Rob was young, Doc took Rob to a machine shop and left him sitting on a workbench while Doc went to get coffee with his buddies. When Doc returned several hours later, he was amazed to find Rob sitting in the same spot, just watching the machinery, eager to be the dutiful son.
Rob attended Loveland High School where he played football and basketball. After graduating from high school in 1964, Rob attended the University of Wyoming where he studied political science and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. It was there Rob met Trudy Brower (Sargent) and they married in November 1968. After college, Rob became a pilot in the Air Force and went on to serve his country as a Captain in Vietnam. Rob and Trudy welcomed a daughter, Nancy, in July 1971. Rob eventually settled in Fort Collins, where he owned a construction company and worked for Leisure Time Products for more than 20 years. Rob loved his job and especially the opportunity to travel around the country as the Vice President of Sales before retiring in 2005.
Rob met his match, Marilynn Norris, in 1990 while out for drinks with friends at the County Cork in Fort Collins. After their first date at the Moot House, their fate was sealed and they got hitched in Las Vegas on September 27, 1996, surrounded by family and close friends. Marilynn was Rob's anchor and true companion for the next 30+ years, always by his side, caring for him until the very end.
Rob and Marilynn loved to travel and took many memorable trips with their dear friends, Monte and Marian Deines. Rob also loved sports of all kinds and could often be heard (near and far) cheering on his favorite teams, the Wyoming Cowboys, the Colorado Rockies, and the Denver Broncos.
Rob and Marilynn loved to entertain and they threw many memorable parties over the years, including the Norris Family Reunion, Memorial Day BBQs, and of course, the annual Christmas party. Rob loved this time of year – elaborate light displays, Christmas Village, holiday music and movies, and most importantly, family traditions. Rob was in his element when he was telling stories in his kitchen or around the fire, as long as he had an audience. No one could tell a story like Rob. He could turn even the dullest detail into a hilarious story – thanks to his booming voice and waiving hands – causing everyone around him to hang on his every word.
Rob was a wonderful father to Nancy and uncle to his three nieces, Brooke, Jessica, and Shawna. To say Rob was thrilled when his twin granddaughters, Tate and Brynn, were born on July 1, 2008, is an understatement. Rob loved spending time with his granddaughters, teaching them how to fish, play chess and bocce ball, ride bikes, you name it. Rob's happy place was on a boat in Grand Lake with his family, anxiously watching and hoping his granddaughters would catch a fish. Of course, no one ever caught a fish, but that didn't matter to Rob. We will cherish the memories we made on that boat forever.
Rob leaves behind his loving family – his wife, Marilynn Trethewey, his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Trethewey and David Williams of Denver, CO, his two beautiful granddaughters, Tate and Brynn, his granddog Pepper, his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Susie Trethewey of Loveland, CO, and his nieces, Brooke Trethewey and Shawna Trethewey of Loveland, CO, and Jessica Wiggam (Eric, Avenly, Dean, and JR) of Oak Ridge, NC. Rob also leaves behind his Aunt Jo Trethewey of Loveland, CO, and his cousins and their families, Pat Farnham and Sally Moninger of Loveland, CO, and Sue Mallot of La Junta, CO, and the Mullison family; Ed and Louise Norris of Fort Collins, CO, Dick and Michal Norris of Tucson, AZ, and the rest of the Norris family, as well as many lifelong friends.
Even though Rob left us too soon, the best way to honor his life is to keep living. Please raise a glass (preferably a moose mug) in his honor this holiday season. Rob's family is very grateful for the kind and compassionate care he received from Dignity Hospice (
