Robert Lee "Bob" Sweat, 94, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was born on June 8, 1931 and passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026. He was the son of J.B. and Ora (Wild) Sweat of Lamar, Colorado.
Bob lived a full and meaningful life rooted in curiosity, service, and deep devotion to his family. Over the years, he made his home in Lincoln, Nebraska; Caldwell, Idaho; and Fort Dodge, Iowa, before retiring to Fort Collins in 1995—a place that suited him well, surrounded by the mountains he so dearly loved.
Bob proudly served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1961. He was a lifelong learner, earning his BS and DVM degrees from Colorado State University, followed by a PhD from the University of Nebraska. He devoted his professional career to veterinary virology, a field that reflected both his sharp mind and his desire to make a meaningful contribution to the world.
Above all else, Bob was a family man. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Barbara Jean (Shaffer) Sweat, who passed away on July 7, 2025. Together they built a life filled with love, partnership, and adventure. Bob is survived by his son Mike Sweat (Kathy) of Lansing, Michigan, and his daughter Deb House (Jim) of Folsom, California; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Bob was a sweet, gentle man—an amazing husband and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be remembered for the years of exciting adventures he shared with his family, especially traveling and camping together. He had a special love for the mountains, where he felt most at peace.
In keeping with his wishes, no services will be held. His family will gather at a later date to remember and celebrate his life, the quiet kindness he carried, and the deep love he gave so freely.
