Surrounded by family, Robert Alan Schoondermark found peace on January 22, 2010. A Fort Collins native, Robert was born July 2, 1946 at Poudre Valley Hospital to Dr. Arthur H. Schoondermark and Florence Schoondermark. Robert graduated from the old Fort Collins High School in 1964. Robert joined the Marines in 1966. He served in Vietnam from 1966 – 1967, receiving the Purple Heart for combat at Ambush Valley September, 7, 1967 through September 10, 1967. Other medals he received were Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit citation Gallantry Cross Color with bronze palm and frame, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, and Meritorious Mast. Every year on September 10th, "Sho" as he was known, would call his captain and fellow Marines, thankful that they were still here. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Robert married Marlene Bauer in 1984. They had one son, Robert Arthur Schoondermark. Robert was in the sprinkler business for over 30 years, working at Mills Brothers before going on his own as Roberts Sprinkler Service. Survivors include his mother, Florence Griffith; son, Robert Arthur; grandson, Gavin Kyle; Gavin's mother, Ashley Merritt; his sister, Aloha Marie Emmett Weiss; a brother, Paul Donna Griffith; two nephews and two nieces. He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Schoondermark and his wife, Marlene Bauer Schoondermark. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Gavin's College Fund in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Grandview Cemetery.
