Robert E. "Bud" Carlson passed away at the Fort Collins Healthcare Center on August 9, 2010. He was born September 24, 1930 to Axel and Signe Carlson in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1948. He joined the Navy and went to Electricians School. He decided he would like to be on a submarine so he went to school for that. He served aboard the U.S.S. Pickerel that was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. His enlistment was extended a year because of the Korean War. He served from 1948 – 1952. Bud married Betty Hofferber December 23, 1950 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She joined him in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1951. When Bud left the Navy, he went back to Cheyenne and worked for Cheyenne News Agency. In 1957 he was asked to move to Fort Collins, Colorado and manage Poudre Valley News, which later became Mountain States News. He worked there until 1995 when he retired. He became president of that company. Bud was a man of great integrity and a good caring family man. He enjoyed playing golf, bicycling and swimming. After he retired, he and Betty would spend six months in Fort Collins and six months in Mesa, Arizona where they made many close friends. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Todd Carlson, his wife, Betty and their son, Phillip of Severance; daughter, Susan Urban, her husband, Kelly and their daughter, Courtney of Fort Collins; a sister, Marian Gatto and her husband, Dick of Denver, Colorado; and a sister-in-law, Linda Carlson of Cheyenne.
Bud is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Gerald Carlson. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive, Fort Collins, Colorado 80524.
