Listen to Obituary
Rex Lee Pomeroy, 71, of Fort Collins, passed away in his home on Sunday, April 18, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Rex was born in Los Angeles, California on April 17, 1939 to Vera Roach and Kenneth W. Pomeroy. He graduated from George Washington High School, and spent time as a camp counselor, when he decided to dedicate his life to children. He achieved his teaching degree from Sterling College, in Sterling, Kansas, where he met the love of his life. He married Rose Ellen Treaster on July 14, 1963, in Sterling. Rex and Rosie both taught elementary school in Kansas for eight years. They were surprised by the birth of twin daughters in 1967. Their son was born in 1969, after which they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. Rex dedicated 32 years to teaching, third, fourth, and fifth grades, 24 of them in Fort Collins at Barton and Shephardson elementary schools. He was a brave, patient, and kind teacher who is remembered by many students who were influenced by his caring over the years. His genuine love for children was inspiring and a constant source of happiness for him. He was very proud to receive the Madeline Hunter certificate and pin in recognition of his completion of the Mastery Teaching Program. He was greatly moved by the outpouring of correspondence from former students and colleagues during his illness. Rex was an avid CSU women's volleyball fan along with his wife; they held season tickets as long as they were offered. He volunteered countless hours at the Rocky Mountain Raptor Rehabilitation Center, and especially loved working with the owls. His deep bass voice resonated in the choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was an active member, elder, and deacon. He was a life-long philatelist, collecting stamps and covers from Antarctica. After years of teaching and being enamored with Australia, he finally fulfilled one of his dreams by traveling there and to New Zealand with his wife and son, and was one of his most cherished memories. He battled stage four melanoma for a year with grace and courage, and died surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Rosie Pomeroy; his sister Gayle and her husband Gordon; his daughter Dawn and son-in-law Jeff Slifer; his daughter Kim and son-in-law Don Robuck; his son Marc and daughter-in-law Susan Pomeroy; seven grandchildren, and two cats. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 20, from 12 to 7 p.m. at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1709 W. Elizabeth, on Wednesday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m., with internment immediately following at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Rex's name to Westminster Presbyterian Church, or to Pathways Hospice in care Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive, Ft. Collins, CO 80524.
