It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Mohamed Yehia Shahin, who passed away peacefully in the early hours of August 21, 2025, in Windsor, Colorado.

Mo came to the United States from Egypt for post-graduate studies after completing his undergraduate degree at only 18. He built a remarkable life dedicated to his family, his profession, and improving the world around him. He was preceded in death by his father Abdullah Shaheen, his mother Nazera Ibrahim, his sister Nazik Shaheen, and his brother Magdy Shaheen. He is survived by Eunice Zumdahl, his beloved partner of 30 years; his daughter Michelle Wood and her husband Lee Wood, and their children Isabella Wood and Leroy John Wood; his son Michael Shahin and his wife Caryn Shahin, and their children Elliot and Emilia Shahin; his nephew Sherif Shaheen of Egypt; and Beatriz Shahin, the mother of his children. He was a devoted father and grandfather who took great pride in his family. Though deeply committed to his professional work, family always came first for Mo. He believed that kindness and doing good deeds mattered most. One of his greatest joys was attending recitals, games, and events for his grandchildren.

Mo was a visionary engineer and an internationally recognized pioneer in pavement management systems. His remarkable career spanned more than five decades. He developed the revolutionary PAVER™ pavement management system during his time as a research engineer at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL). This program reached its 51-year milestone earlier this year. His groundbreaking work on the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) became the global standard for evaluating pavement conditions. Throughout his distinguished career he received numerous accolades from across the globe for his transformative contributions to the field.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mo touched countless lives as a teacher and guide to younger engineers. He approached both work and life with an infectious enthusiasm and genuine care for others, always eager to share his knowledge and support those around him on their own journeys.

Mo had a deep love for animals, especially his beloved Great Pyrenees, Lucy, who passed years ago but remained forever in his heart. He maintained a lifelong connection to his home country of Egypt and especially cared for the poor and needy of Egypt, making numerous donations throughout his life and ensuring his generosity would continue even beyond. An avid soccer fan, Mo passionately followed the Egyptian national team and Liverpool, with a special admiration for Mohamed Salah, whose success brought him great joy. He also loved ballroom dancing, bringing the same enthusiasm to the dance floor that he brought to all aspects of his life.

Mo's legacy lives on through the love and knowledge he shared with his family and colleagues. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
