Michael Randall Staples, 67, of Fort Collins passed away on August 22, 2016, while awaiting a heart transplant. He was born November 9, 1948, to Charley Sitman Staples and Velma Nation Staples in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a proud graduate of University High in Baton Rouge. He went on to earn both a bachelors and a masters degree.
Mike was proud to have served in the U.S. Army - 1st Battalion, 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) at Fort Myer, Virginia. He was honored to participate in numerous burial ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery. After his service was completed, he worked as a teacher, assistant
principal, and school district transportation director. He then transitioned into the car rental industry as a manager. Mike lived in Louisiana, Texas, and Illinois before moving to Fort Collins in 1990.
Mike especially enjoyed being with his family. When his sons were younger, he enjoyed traveling with them, sharing sports, and working on cars. As they grew older, he enjoyed retirement with his wife Janet. He really liked their trips to Maui. He spent many happy hours with his
granddaughter Kellie. He loved being with his Pekingese dogs and Himalayan cats. He also enjoyed playing golf and reading.
Mike was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Janet Katherine Staples, two sons Michael David Staples and wife Donna and Bradley Steven Staples, a granddaughter Kellie Renee Staples, and a brother Jeffery S. Staples and wife Susan. He also leaves behind a sister-in-law Virginia Davis and husband Edward, a niece Kristi Akers and
husband Tim, a nephew Bryan Davis and wife Valerie, great-nieces Ainsley Akers, Mirabelle Esposito Davis, Zara Esposito Davis, and a great-nephew Wyatt Akers. He was preceded in death by a son Bruce W. Johnson, a brother Charley S. Staples, Jr., and his parents Charley S. Staples, Sr. and Velma N. Staples.
A family graveside service will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association or to a charity of your choice.
