Michael James "Mike" Schrom, 70, of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away peacefully with his son Jonathan by his side in his beloved hometown on March 14, 2026. Rather than mourning an ending, we celebrate a life remarkably well-lived—one filled with duty, adventure, hard work, and above all, an immense love for his family.
Born on August 29, 1955, in Rochester, Minnesota, to Frank and Martha Schrom, Mike grew up as one of seven siblings in a lively family that instilled in him strong values of loyalty, resilience, and humor. He graduated from Poudre High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he began forging the independent spirit that would define his path.
At just 18, Mike answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He specialized in artillery and rose steadily through the ranks, earning the respected position of Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). To his closest friends and fellow Marines, he was simply—and affectionately—"Gunny," a name that carried the perfect mix of respect, camaraderie, and that signature Marine grit. Over 17 years of honorable service, he embodied the Marine Corps ethos of discipline, leadership, and camaraderie—qualities that stayed with him for the rest of his life.
After retiring from the Marines, Mike brought that same dedication to a new chapter, spending another 17 years with Union Pacific Railroad as a Form B Foreman. He took pride in his work on the rails, where his attention to detail and steady hand helped keep things moving safely and efficiently.
Beyond his careers, Mike found great joy in life's simpler pleasures. He was an enthusiastic fan of horse racing, delighting in the thrill of the track and the strategy of the sport. Fishing was another passion—he loved the quiet patience it required and the stories that came with every catch.
Yet Mike always said his greatest milestones, the ones that filled his heart most, were his two sons: Jonathan and Ray Schrom. He was a devoted father whose pride in them knew no bounds, and he cherished every moment spent with them and, later, with his grandchildren.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Martha Schrom; his sisters Ronnie Armstrong, Mary King, and Martha King; and his brother PFC. John Schrom (KIA Vietnam War 1968). He leaves behind a family grateful for his example and ready to carry forward the love he gave so freely.
He is survived by his sons, Jonathan Schrom of California and Ray Schrom of Colorado; his sisters Dee Hennessy of Colorado and Kathy Schafer of Colorado; his grandchildren Landon Schrom, Jordan Schrom, and Ethan Schrom, all of California; and his nephews Mark King of Michigan, Scott King of Colorado, Kenny King of Arizona, and Ronald Armstrong of California. Extended family and friends will remember him for his straightforward kindness, his quick wit, and the quiet strength he brought to every room.
Mike lived a life of service, adventure, and deep family devotion. His legacy is one of pride in duty, appreciation for the simple joys, and an unwavering love for those he held closest. We will carry his stories, his laughter, and his example forward with gratitude and celebration.
A graveside service with military honors will be held 11am, Friday, March 20, 2026 at Grandview Cemetery.
