May Klare Chapman, of Loveland, died on June 16, 2012. She was born on February 15, 1917 to Anna Hass Klare and Herman H. Klare in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated from LSU with a BS degree in mathematics in 1940. In March 1941 she married Carl Roy Chapman in Honolulu, then a U.S. territory of Hawaii. He preceded her in death. Her primary career was in test data evaluation and documentation of such early developments as the heat-seeking air-to-air missile Sidewinder, the first intercontinental ballistic missile and space vehicle booster Atlas, and the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo man-in-space programs. For the final 20 years of her career she did editorial work at home, preparing manuscripts of technical books for publication by several East Coast publishers. For recreation, she especially enjoyed camping trips with her two sons. She is survived by her sons, Carl Roy Chapman, Jr., and his wife, Lura Jan Fassett of Loveland, and David Thomas Chapman and his wife, Dorothy May Weir of Brisbane, Australia; grandchildren Archie Carl Chapman and his wife, Jenny of Brisbane, Sally May Chapman of Brisbane, and Marnie Chapman of Sitka, Alaska; cousins, John J. McCarthy and his wife, Connie of Long Beach, Mississippi, Martin H. McCarthy, world traveler, and Jack Islin and his wife, Fran of Illinois; and by many nieces and nephews. Cremation was completed by Bohlender Funeral Chapel. No service is scheduled.
