Mary Grace Coming (nee Smith), 79, passed from this life on January 15, 2015, of health complications following brain surgery. The daughter of William Thomas Smith and Mary Winner Hughes, she was born in Hattiesburg, MS, on November 6, 1935. Her early childhood was spent in New Orleans, LA, until her family moved to California. She attended Mission Grammar School in San Luis Obispo, Ca, and Moreland Notre Dame High School in Watsonville, CA. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Grammar School Teaching from the College of Notre Dame in Saratoga/Belmont, CA. For 17 years, as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, she taught first through fourth grades in various schools in San Jose, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Salinas, CA, and Portland, OR.
In 1969 she relocated to Fort Collins, where she worked for two years at the Foothills Campus of CSU as a technical typist. Following her marriage to Donald Eugene Coming on December 29, 1971, she collaborated with her father in the Coming/Smith Professional Stenography business. Her only child, Reeta Mary Coming, was born July 17, 1973.
When her daughter was in elementary school, Mary Grace co-led Brownie and Junior Girl Scout troops. For many years, she was a tireless advocate for the protection of unborn babies through her association with the Right to Life organization. She was active in the Legion of Mary and served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion for St. Joseph Catholic Church, visiting shut-ins and leading Bible studies with them.
She participated in Colorado CURE, advocating for the rights of prisoners and their families. In recent years she maintained an extensive correspondence with prisoners in Colorado and other states and assisted recently-released prisoners with re-entry issues. She served as a representative to the probation department for the St. Augustine Adult Catholic Community and was instrumental in catechizing probationers/parolees who wished to enter the Catholic Church.
Mrs. Coming was preceded in death by her parents, Mary & Bill, her husband Don, and her aunt and uncle, Wanda and David Hughes. She is survived by her daughter, Reeta (Daniel Treat) and three grandchildren, Alex, Ben, and Grace Janet, and her brother, Peter Graham Smith (Judith), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her family and many friends will miss her cheerful attitude and infectious laugh and the numerous ways in which she sought to minister to those who needed a loving presence in their lives. She was not one to take credit for the deeds of mercy which she performed – trusting always in the grace and mercy of God.
