Lucille Ethel Shaw Van Why, age 90, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at Castle Rock Assisted Living, Castle Rock CO. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M, September 22, at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1709 West Elizabeth, Fort Collins. Interment will be at the Roselawn Cemetery at 2718 E. Mulberry, Fort Collins. Reverend Rich Fennig will officiate. Lucille Van Why was born September 19, 1918, in Greeley. She was the second of five children born to Roy Edward Shaw and Goldie Ethel Day Shaw, then living in Greeley. She grew up west of Ault where the family moved in 1924. She graduated from Pierce High School. On April 1, 1939, she married Edward Benjamin Van Why at Nunn, Colorado. For a time they lived in Greeley, later taking over the Van Why homestead in the CarrGÇöDover area where they were dairy and wheat farmers. While on the homestead, Lucille was active in the Carr schools and community organizations. She also drove a school bus. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Carr and later the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Fort Collins. In 1959, Lucille and Ed moved to Fort Collins where she worked at Sears and the Larimer County AssessorGÇÖs Office, retiring in 1983. In these jobs, her natural gregarious nature found great fulfillment, partly because she did not understand the word GÇ£stranger.GÇ¥ Hence, she leaves a broad circle of friends and relatives. Survivors include her sister Elva Slonaker and husband Clyde of Canon City, her brother, Clifford Shaw and wife, Barbara of Fort Collins, sister-in-law, Fannie Shaw of Wheat Ridge, daughter Glenda Chermak and husband Phil of Lafayette, son Duane Van Why and wife Beverly of Monument, son Sam Van Why and wife Donna of Castle Rock, 13 grandchildren 28 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ed Van Why, brother Roy Edward II, brother Leonard John Shaw, and grandson Jeffrey Van Why.
