Lt. Col. Albert "Bert" Campbell, Jr., died April 5, 2008, in Fort Collins. Friends and family will celebrate Bert's life at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 East Drake, Fort Collins. Internment will follow at 2 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Bert was born in Wabash County, Ind., on Oct. 13, 1935, the youngest of 11, to Albert and Clara Campbell. He married Joan Fisherbuck on July 10, 1955, and they had four daughters. Joan preceded him in death in 1999. Bert received a bacehlor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a master's degree from Georgia Tech. He served 24 years in the Army. Following retirement, he remained busy with various other jobs. They moved to Fort Collins in 1994. Bert was an active volunteer in the church, the Northern Front Range Wanderers, and for the ALS Association - transporting equipment between Denver and Northern Colorado, manning an information booth for the health fairs, and participating in the annual ALSA "Walk to D'Feet ALS." He also volunteered for Hearts and Horses and enjoyed spending time with his family, hiking, biking and traveling. It was on one of his bike rides that he met Patricia Morrison Herring, and the two were married on April 15, 2006. The two enjoyed many adventures together, including trips along the Colorado Trail, completing bike rides across Iowa and the upper peninsula of Michigan, visits with family and friends and a mission trip to Guatemala. Bert is survived by his wife, Pat, of Fort Collins; his four daughters, Carole Campbell, of Angels Camp, Calif., Claire Campbell Brian Makare of Boulder, Alice Dortch Steve of Eagle, and Ann Thomas John of Evergreen; two step-children, David Herring Carolyn of Waynesboro, Va., and Laura Trenbeath Dan of Pavillion, Wyo.; nine grandchildren and seven brothers and sisters.
