Lois Faye (Kendrick) Douthit passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024. Until the end, she maintained her gentle soul, and her life revolved around family, friends, and helping others.
Lois was born February 13, 1935, to Glen and Mabel Kendrick in Chadron, Nebraska. She grew up in Whitney and Chadron, Nebraska, where she was involved in 4H and Band. She graduated from Chadron High School, followed by attending Chadron State College, where she graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and Teaching. Upon graduating, she taught in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Lois met her husband, Melvin Douthit, at square dancing club. They were married in 1958 in Whitney, Nebraska, and then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, just before it became a state. Soon after, they moved back to Nebraska, and then to California. While in California, Lois taught special education, and was involved in cub scouts, little league, and church, where she taught Sunday School and led children's worship.
In 1980, Lois moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where she continued to teach special education. She became involved with Dance Express and Special Olympics as a volunteer coach in volleyball, basketball, track and softball. In 2012, she received the Mayor's Award for Volunteer of Year – an accomplishment she was proud of. Lois continued to coach until her 'retirement' in her mid-80's. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, painting, sewing, and crocheting. Lois was also a die-hard Nebraska Husker Football fan - she watched every game faithfully.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, and her sister, Karyl Saxton. She is survived by her brother, Dick Kendrick, her children: Michael Douthit, Jerry Douthit, Tracey Douthit and Crystal Ford, and her grandchildren: Christopher Douthit, Lacey Lindgren, Hannah Douthit, and Haylee Douthit.
In remembrance, a gathering will take place at 1 pm, on October 23, 2024, at Bohlender's Chapel, where we will honor Lois's enduring impact on our community and hearts.
