Lloyd Dunaway said goodbye on Oct. 11, 2014, and began his next journey. He was born in Denver on April 23, 1936 to Belle and Cal Dunaway. Lloyd spent his childhood in Walden, Colorado, living and working with his parents on cattle ranches. After graduating from Jackson County High School in 1955, Lloyd attended Colorado State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture, 1959. Lloyd went on to serve in the United States Army. After an Honorable Discharge from the military, Lloyd returned to Walden, and soon met the love of his life, Karen Sterry Dunaway. Lloyd and Karen married, and spent the next 36 years together, until her death in 2001. Lloyd and Karen had three children, and parenting was of the utmost importance to them. Lloyd owned and operated a large cattle and hay business, known as Dunaway Livestock Company. Lloyd often stated how fortunate he was, to own a business that allowed him the freedom to spend a lot of time with his wife and kids. When Lloyd retired, he moved to Ft. Collins, CO. It was there that he met Marcia Elwood, and spent many enjoyable years with her, as his companion and dear friend. Lloyd had many stories that he shared with his family and friends. Lloyd loved the game of football, and played on Walden's first high school football team. He talked about playing football in a hay meadow, where yard lines were made from coal dust, on top of the snow covered surface. Lloyd was proud of his military service. After basic training, he was stationed in a communication center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lloyd often said, he had the best duty the Army could offer. As a rancher, Lloyd enjoyed buying cattle, and seemed to like hauling cows over the mountain in extreme weather conditions. Lloyd rarely passed up a chance to attend a bull sale with friends. Lloyd was very good at welding and repairing things. He used these skills frequently to maintain his fleet of heavily used and outdated hay equipment. Lloyd also had the ability to find a good horse, which was important to him when working his cow herd. During the many years that Lloyd lived in Walden with his family, he was active in the community. He served in various organizations, including: North Park Stockgrowers, Woolgrowers, and eight years on the North Park School District, board of education. Lloyd was a 4-H leader, both in sheep club, and shooting sports. Education and youth organizations were important to him. Lloyd was a large donor to Colorado State University Athletics, and enjoyed home football games from his seat in the skybox. Lloyd was a generous man, who appreciated the small things. In retirement, he loved nothing more than spending summers on his ranch in Walden. Lloyd would sit on the deck of his cabin, enjoy the scenery, and talk with family and friends all day long. Lloyd Dunaway passed away peacefully with family by his side. Lloyd is survived by his son, Lance Dunaway and wife, Brooke; friend, Marcia Elwood; daughter, Rachel Dunaway and partner, Karen Romeo; daughter, Rebecca Wilkinson and husband, Bud; grandchildren, Calee and Troy Wilkinson. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Dunaway and parents, Cal and Belle Dunaway.
