Joseph Lloyd Gomez passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. Born in Erie, Colorado, to Florencio and Gertrude Gomez on November 15, 1931, Lloyd was raised in the Rocky Mountains of Crested Butte. After serving in the US Army from 1952 to 1954, he married Mary O. Garcia on October 31, 1954, in Pueblo, Colorado. Completing barber school in Pueblo, together they moved to Fort Collins in 1955 to begin their wonderful life and 54 years of marriage together. Lloyd joined Saint Joseph Catholic Church in 1955, where his deep sense of faith and community carried him throughout his years. Well known throughout the Fort Collins community by his classic West Laurel Street barber shop, Lloyd, the "Mayor of Laurel Street", barbered in Fort Collins for 59 years from 1955 to 2014, a passion and trade he was greatly proud of. He touched the lives of all walks of life, one haircut at a time, through his stories and life's experiences. Lloyd was well-involved with the Knights of Columbus and Boy Scout Troop 95 since around 1974. His hobbies included fly fishing, fly tying, camping, scouting, story-telling, travel, and being a wonderful husband and father. Lloyd is preceded in death by wife Mary O. Gomez; sisters Regina Gomez and Mercy Duran. He is survived by his six children: Lawrence Gomez, Irving, TX; Linda Hernandez, Longmont, CO; Patricia Bell, Fort Collins, CO; Chris Gomez, Aurora, CO; Julie Garcia, Fort Collins, CO; and, Benita Cederquist, Fort Collins, CO; 13 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandkids. Rosary will be held at 6 pm Monday, October 23; Funeral Mass to follow Tuesday, October 24 at 9:30 am. Both services will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church. And, finally, interment with military honors will be held at Grandview Cemetery.
