John was a devoted father, faithful husband, and great friend with a heart of gold. He was the best man at weddings, the one who always found time for others, and the man who would help those in need. John worked as a Field Engineer at IBM in New York for 30 years before retiring to sunny Colorado.
"Poppy" never outgrew his youthful spirit, age was never a factor as you would find him sledding with his grandchildren, on the tennis court, or out on his bike. He was not afraid to be a kid with the kids as evidenced by the number of broken bones and stitches received after the age of 60.
John loved life and adventures. He shared his love of the outdoors with friends and family whether walking on the beach, skipping rocks, playing tennis, skiing, biking, or hiking (usually in the rain). He never let bad weather take away from the fun.
In addition to family Sundays, one highlight of his life was the 1973 cross country road trip he took with his family. John built a wood box for the top of their old station wagon to store the canvas tents and camping gear. His children will always remember the windstorms that decimated the campsite, the bear that "visited" their birthday party, breathtaking views, miles of hiking, campfire songs, and countless memories.
John leaves behind the love of his life and adventure companion for over 65 years, Loretta, and their four children; Kathy Michaels (Frank), Kevin (Lisa), John (Suzanne), and Debbie (Mark). John was the beloved brother of 8 siblings and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. "Poppy" was a cherished grandpa to 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
