Joan Smith Kane, 79, of Fort Collins, died Aug. 30, 2008, at a local nursing home. Mrs. Kane was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Pasadena, Calif., to J. Howell Smith and Lynette Westfall Smith. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and completed her college work at UCLA. Joan married Ed Johnson in 1951 in Pasadena and then in 1971 she married her second husband, Thomas Kane in Longmont. Mrs. Kane lived in Fort Collins for 28 years and was retired from J.C. Penney's. Joan delivered Meals on Wheels for over 15 years. She was a member of the Rock Hounds and was past president of Pi Phi Sorority. She enjoyed Japanese Brush Painting. Survivors include her husband, Thomas Kane of Fort Collins; a son, Scott Johnson of Beaumont, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Daly of Boulder; two stepdaughters, Christine Maurais of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Hilary Appleby of Palm Desert, Calif.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren. Preceding Joan in death are her parents and a great-grandchild, Aleana Johnson. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, 531 S. College. Rev. Jon Heeringa will officiate at the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Meals On Wheels of Larimer County in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive St., Fort Collins, CO 80524.
