Jeffrey D. Stewart, of Fort Collins, passed away on July 9, 2025, at the age of 81.
Jeff was born on August 16, 1943, in Lubbock, Texas, the eldest child of Donald and Alice Stewart. After some early moves, the family settled in Amarillo, Texas. Jeff graduated from Amarillo High School in 1961. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech University, where he also met the love of his life, Joy Jasper. They were married in 1967, and moved briefly to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Jeff completed his master's degree at Louisiana State University.
Jeff and Joy moved first to Dallas, and in 1970 they moved to Amarillo, where they welcomed their first son, Andy, in 1971 and their second, Brad, in 1975. While in Amarillo, the family was active at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Jeff enjoyed running in local races of various distances and camping with his family.
In 1990, the family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where Jeff spent 18 years working at Oklahoma State University before retiring in 2008. Always wanting to live in Colorado, Jeff and Joy moved to Fort Collins in 2012, where he was active in Golden K – serving as club president in 2017 – and was able to spend time exploring the state prior to the 2020 pandemic.
Jeff was a planner and detail-oriented, as would be expected of an engineer. He had a lively sense of humor and enjoyed movies of all genres with his family. Family vacations were a cherished tradition, and he was able to pass on his love of travel and music to both his sons.
In his later years, Jeff and his family lived with the profound effects of Alzheimer's disease. The steady, thoughtful man his family had always known became, at times, unfamiliar—but even in the hardest moments, they held close the memory of who he had been: witty, wise, devoted, and kind.
His family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff at MorningStar Memory Care in Fort Collins and the team at Pathways Hospice, whose patient, loving care provided comfort and dignity during Jeff's final chapter.
Jeff is preceded in death by his parents and his youngest sister Terrie. He is survived by his wife, Joy; sons, Andy(Evie) of McKinney, Texas and Brad (Kristen), of Breckenridge, Colorado; two grandchildren, Madison and Bella; his sister, Victoria, of Woodland Park, New Jersey; and his faithful dog Annie, who rarely left his side..
A memorial service will be held at Bohlender Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, July 16, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Amarillo Children's Home.
