Jean Evelyn Underwood Shirey was born October 23, 1920 in Saginaw, Michigan. The Underwood family moved to Gary, Indiana where Jean completed her education. Upon graduation from high school, Jean was sent to the University of Indiana to further her education. Within days, Jean called her beau, Jack Shirey, and they decided to elope. Jean's parents commented at the time "this marriage will never last." Jack and Jean celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on September 12, 2009. Jack and Jean moved to Colorado in 1959 with their three sons. Jean had been in failing health for the past few months. Jean spent much of her working career as either a church or a legal secretary. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and was an active participant in the Lamplighters Class at First Baptist Church in Fort Collins. Preceding Jean in death are her parents, Jay and Frieda Underwood and one son, Dr. James Alan Shirey. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Terry Shirey and Dr. William Shirey; brothers, Sheridan Underwood and James Underwood; four grandchildren, Jennifer Moss, Jack Shirey, Andrew Shirey and Katie Swanson; and three great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. A private graveside service at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery will be held on Monday. Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Cancer Society in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive St., Ft. Collins, CO 80524.
