Dr. J. Stanley Ahmann, 86, of Fort Collins, died Nov. 13, 2007, at his residence. Dr. Ahmann was born Oct. 17, 1921, in Struble, Iowa, to Henry Francis Ahmann and Philomine Wictor Ahmann. He is a descendent of Adolf Otto Ahmann of Marl, Germany. Dr. Ahmann received his BA from Trinity College and his MS and Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Dr. Ahmann was a psychology professor at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; Iowa State Univeristy, Ames, Iowa; and Colorado State University, Fort Collins. He also served as head of the Psychology Department and academic vice president at Colorado State University. In addition to his professorships at the above universities, Dr. Ahmann authored eight books, served as the director of the National Assessment of Educational Progress from 1971 to 1975 and received the Science & Technology Distinguished Professor Award from Iowa State University in 1981. J. Stanley Ahmann was a World War II veteran, serving as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Significant awards included the China Service Medal, Philippine Independence Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two Stars, Navy Occupation Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. Survivors include his four children, Sandi Ashley and her husband Dave of Helena, Mont., Sheri Carmon-Miller and her husband Brad Miller of Fort Collins; Steve Ahmann and his wife Karen of Laurel, Mont., and Shelly Ahmann and her husband Mark White of Atlanta, Ga. Surviving siblings of Dr. Ahmann are Tom Ahmann of Plymouth, Minn., Don Ahmann of Largo, Fla., Jay Ahmann of Ocean Hills, Calif., Mary Drag of Castro Valley, Calif., and Jean Sandman of Sioux City, Iowa. Dr. Ahmann also has 11 surviving grandchildren. A Christian funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Evangelical Free Church, 3920 S. Shields St., Fort Collins. Interment with military honors by the Fort Collins All Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins. Pastor James Olson of Faith Evangelical Free Church will preside at both services. A tax-deductible, charitable, memorial contribution may be made to Opus Spiritus Sancti at 10625 W. Opus Spiritus Sancti is an organization within the Catholic Church that provides medical education to Catholic nuns to equip them to work in hospitals and medical dispensaries in developing countries.
