On the evening of February 6, 2010, H.W. "Wayne" Powers peacefully concluded his 98 years of earthly life. Hailing from Elkins, West Virginia, Wayne was educated at Davis and Elkins College and Purdue University. He was the father of four children and husband to his wife, Hilda for 56 years. After a successful career as an accountant, Wayne moved his family to Fort Collins from the east coast in 1971 to start his own business. When he retired, Wayne enjoyed nearly 40 glorious years pursuing his favorite activities of fishing, fly tying, camping and hunting, with his last hunting trip at 96 years of age! Wayne formed many lasting friendships along his way. Known for his keen intellect and rapier wit, Wayne was a fierce pool player and regularly frequented the Fort Collins Senior Center pool hall. Wayne's humor always prompted laughter and endeared him to those who knew him. Wayne was a truly exceptional person and will be lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda M. Syska Powers; his son, Paul B. Powers; and his three brothers. He is survived by three daughters, Janet Macpherson of Fort Collins, Louise Powers-Ackley of Durango and Ruth Powers of Fort Collins; and two grandchildren, Spencer Powers-Ackerly and Melinda Macpherson. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at 1st Presbyterian Church, 531 S. College. Rev. Rich McDermott will officiate the service. A private Interment will be held at Grandview Cemetery.
