Howard Henry DeGabain, 88, of Loveland, Colorado, died on Friday, July 8 of heart failure due to complications from diabetes and kidney disease.
He was born north of Wellington on October 29, 1927 to Edward and Mabel (Nace) DeGabain. He attended Waverly and Wellington schools where he was a standout basketball player. He was married to Betty Sue Meyers for 51 years before her untimely death from ALS in 2003. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII, spending most of his tour in China. His occupations were farming for hire from the age of 12, owning and operating a 24 hour restaurant in Wellington, working as a Journeyman electrician for the railroad, Postmaster in Wellington and Facilities Maintenance Manager for Hewlett Packard in Loveland.
He is survived by his three daughters: Kathy and husband Doug Harris of California, Debby and husband Steve Hepler of Loveland, and Sandy and husband Jack Jennings of Fort Collins; four grandchildren: Mat Hepler of Loveland, Emily and husband Jeremy Duhancik of Loveland, Jennifer and husband David, Brenton and wife Ashley, all of California; and three great-grandchildren: Eddie, Andy and Paisley. He is also survived by his brother Elvin DeGabain of Bellvue.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, his brother Floyd DeGabain and his sisters Erna Bott and Shirley Eldridge.
There will be a visitation on Friday, July 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Bohlender Funeral Home (121 West Olive, Fort Collins); a graveside service on Saturday morning, July 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens (8426 S College, Loveland), followed by a Celebration Luncheon at 11:00 a.m. at The Garden Room, (697 Denver Ave #100 in Loveland).
Howard's favorite charities were anything to do with ALS.
