Herbert Weir Smith passed away at the age of 83 on October 18, 2026, in Fort Collins. Herb
was born on June 30, 1943, in Decatur, Illinois to the late Ray Smith and Carolyn Weir Smith,
and was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Hofstetter.

While a student at Illinois College majoring in biology, Herb was also a linebacker on the
football team. After graduating he was employed by the Food and Drug Administration where he
worked as an investigator until his retirement in 1994. Herb believed strongly in the mission of
the FDA and was proud of his work and association with the agency. With the FDA, Herb held
posts in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, and Tampa, Florida, where he lived with his wife,
Marty, and two children, Doug and Andrea. He then spent seventeen years as an executive in
the pharmaceutical industry in manufacturing and clinical research in St Petersburg,
Florida, Lincoln, Nebraska and the North Carolina Research Triangle. In 2010, Herb and Marty
retired in Fort Collins, Colorado.

While living in Tampa, Florida, Herb spent several years volunteering with the Boy Scouts,
leading his troop on many camping and canoeing adventures, or as some would say
misadventures. He loved golfing, biking, and fishing, forming many lifelong friendships through
these activities. Known to many as "Helpful Herb," he could always be counted on to lend a
hand. Even in his later years, Herb maintained his sense of humor, sharp wit, and warm smile.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marty; his son, Doug Smith; his daughter, Andrea
Delorey; and his grandson, Jack Delorey. We are deeply grateful for having Herb in our lives for
so many years and will always love and miss him.
