Helen Chandler Betz was born in Nebraska on September 7, 1916 to Flossie and Newton Chandler. Helen died on May 4 in Colorado Springs. She had resided in Colorado Springs for two years to be near her daughter, Lavonne. Helen moved to Colorado as a young child to the Sterling area with her parents and numerous brothers and sisters. She attended school in Procter, CO. Helen married Ezra "Red" Betz in Johnstown on May 15, 1935. They resided and farmed many years in the Johnstown area. Ezra eventually purchased the Fort Collins Sales Yard. Helen was a homemaker throughout her adult life. She was exceptionally supportive of her husband through his many business ventures, particularly during their time at the Fort Collins Sales Yard. Many may recall the meals she prepared for the Cafe every Tuesday, sale day.
Helen was active in the Evangelical Free Church and later the First Baptist Church in Fort Collins. Helen is survived by her daughter, Lavonne in Colorado Springs and her son Clarence of Burlington, WY. Additional survivors are grandchildren, Justin Christine, Kasey Steve Sheridan, Kurt Murray-Cameron Elise, and Estil Pratt. Nine great-grandchildren survive Helen. She was preceeded in death by Ezra, a grandson, Shannon Betz and a son-in-law, Cameron Pratt. Helen was the last living member of the Newton Chandler family of 9 brother and sisters. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery.
