George L. Dischinger, Jr., a Fort Collins community volunteer and former resident of Rochester, New York, died on September 1. He was 84. George was born on March 17, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio to George L. and Gertrude L. Dischinger. He grew up in North Tonawanda, New York. During World War II, George was selected to participate in the Navy's V-12 program and, as part of the program, obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. After the war, he attended the University of Rochester and attained a B.A. in English. He became an officer in the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. Later he received an M.A. from the University of Rochester. When George returned from Korea in 1953, he began work at the University of Rochester, where he served for many years as the Director of Admissions and Student Aid. Later in his career at the University of Rochester, he worked in Alumni Relations and in Corporate and Foundation Relations. He retired from the University of Rochester in 1990 but continued to work as a teacher's aid for children with learning challenges until he moved to Fort Collins in 1999. In 1949, he married Bette Wadsworth in Rochester. George and Bette had four children, Susan Kirkpatrick Allan, George L. Dischinger, III, Tom Dischinger Sylvia and John Dischinger Mindy Rex. Bette died in 1991. George and Grace Zach married.in 2000. George and Grace enjoyed the performing and visual arts, supporting non-profit organizations and lunching out. George relished life and made friends easily. He leaves a loving family. In addition to his wife, children and their spouses, he is survived by his grandchildren, Anne and Robert Kirkpatrick Kristin; George L., Henry, Benjamin, Andrew, Eleanor and Jack Dischinger. His brother, Gerald Dischinger Margy; and his sister Alice Pascucci survive, along with Grace's children, Randy Zach, Diane Zach and special family friends, Sue White and Denise Docter. A celebration of George's life will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1208 W. Elizabeth St. The community concert scheduled Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Griffin Concert Hall at CSU will be an added tribute to George Dischinger's role in bringing Yihan Chen to Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choice in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive St., Ft. Collins, CO 80524.
