Gary Hosler Meister

Gary Hosler Meisters, age 83, of Fort Collins, Colorado passed away December 2, 2015. He was born, raised and married in Ottumwa, Iowa. His wife and high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen, of 59 years preceded him in death by 4 years. He is survived by; his older sister, Donna Elmasian; his daughter, Paula Sue, and son-in-law, Daniel Sisson; his son, Dave and daughter-in-law, Mimi and 3 grandsons, Ryan, Dylan and Griffin. Gary graduated with his PhD in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1957 and was a professor of mathematics and research mathematician for 40 years. He taught at many Universities across the country: the University of Colorado Boulder until 1972, and then University of Nebraska, where he retired as a world-renowned mathematician in 1997. Colleagues often referred to him as a mathematician's mathematician. Eighty people representing eight different countries around the world attended his 3-day retirement celebration, honoring him and his work in the field of mathematics. Many of his graduate students kept in touch with him over the years. Gary had a relentless passion for finding mathematical and scientific explanations for all things. He will be greatly missed.
