Listen to Obituary
On January 11, 2013, Evelyn, our wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went home to the Lord. Her husband of over 70 years and son were at her side. Evelyn Smith Luther was born July 7, 1923. She was raised on a farm near Watts, Oklahoma. She often jokingly said she was the original farmers' daughter. She loved a good joke and she had a smile and a laugh that would light up a room and make everyone around her happy to be involved. After graduating from high school in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Evelyn left to stay with an aunt in Eads, Colorado. In the fall of 1941, she enrolled at Barnes Business School in Denver. In October she met her future husband at a Halloween party. He was in the Army Air Corps stationed at Lowery Field. Evelyn married Ellsworth "Smitty" Smith on September 5, 1942. A son was born while Smitty was overseas in the Philippines. After the war, the family moved to Eads, Colorado until 1949, then to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma for three years. There, a daughter was born. In 1952, the family moved back to Eads where they owned and operated a dry goods store until 1966. The next move was to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1966 where they opened the first Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Store. She later worked for and retired from Fort Collins Federal Savings and Loan, later known as Home Federal. Evelyn loved the Poudre Canyon and for many years the family owned a cabin in the Canyon. She truly enjoyed spending time at the cabin, fishing and enjoying life.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, and her daughter, Judy. She is survived by her husband of 70 years; a son, Doug; grandchildren, Stacie David, Shi Smith, and Ryan Kirsten Smith; two great grandchildren, Edison and Emilie, with another soon to be born in March. She is also survived by a sister and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation will be performed. Private family services will follow. In lieu of cards or flowers, please send donations to: The Alzheimer's Association in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W Olive, Fort Collins, Colorado 80524.
