Listen to Obituary
Etta Marie Dix, 85, died peacefully on August 5, 2010 at Lemay Avenue Health and Rehab Center in Fort Collins, CO. She was born in Phillips County, Colorado on June 28, 1925, the first of seven children born to David and Helen Nauman Evans. Etta Marie grew up with her family 6 miles east of Haxtun, CO on the family farm. Life was not easy during her youth, but she did her part helping her parents on the farm and being the big sister to her younger brothers and sisters. Etta Marie attended Plainview Country School and graduated from Haxtun High School in 1943. Following high school she worked in Greeley, CO and the First National Bank in Fleming. It was at the bank she met Vernon Dix, whom she married on August 25, 1946. Together they made their home in Haxtun and raised their children, Dorothy, Richard, and Marilyn. The marriage ended in divorce in 1975. Etta Marie enjoyed working at Smythe's Department store for her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Gerald Brewer for several years and then moved to Fort Collins, CO in 1978. This move allowed her to be closer to her daughters and families. She was employed by First Interstate Bank of Fort Collins until her retirement and she valued her work and friendships through this relationship very much. She enjoyed a comfortable retirement for several years until dementia made it necessary to relocate to elder care facilities in Fort Collins. She found joy in being a homemaker along with her involvement and membership in home extension club, PEO, United Methodist Church and many other community activities. She loved flowers and a beautiful yard and often shared stories of the depression and dust bowl years when such beauty wasn't possible. She also was very talented when it came to any type of craft, especially, ceramics. Her fingers and hands seemed to know exactly what to do. Etta Marie was generous with her time and talents over the years and many friends, organizations, and family members were the beneficiaries. She is survived by her children and spouses, Dorothy and Richard Schild of Torrington, WY, Richard and Linda Dix of Medina, WA, and Marilyn and Jim Pullin of Fort Collins, CO; grandchildren, JoLynn Schild and John White and LeAnn Schildand Dan Ostheimer of Denver area, Schuyler and Jordan Dix of Medina, WA, and Savannah Pullin of Fort Collins; great-grandchildren are Madison White and new Baby Boy Ostheimer, born August 9, 2010; brothers, Robert and Betty Evans of Crook, Darrell and Teri Evans of Palisade, NE; sisters, Mary Louise Evans of Haxtun, Marjorie Evans and Gerald Brewer of Holyoke, and Lorraine Evans of Sterling. Preceding her in death were her ex-husband, parents, brother, Harold Evans, and granddaughter, Taylor Pullin. Memorial Service will be held at the Haxtun United Methodist Church on Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Haxtun United Methodist Church in care of Dorothy Schild, 242 Willow Court Torrington, WY 82240.
