On April 8, 2023, Dorothy Hampton passed peacefully, surrounded by family. Dorothy was born to Margret and John Mullen on August 24, 1938, in Evansville, Indiana. She joined her older brother Johnny Mullen and sister Mary Sue Mullen. At a young age her family moved to Manzanola, Colorado, living and enjoying the farming life. She followed in her mother's footsteps and received her nursing degree from Saint Mary Corwin in Pueblo.
Her first nursing job brought her to Walden, Colorado as the Jackson County public nurse. Here she met and married the love of her life, Jerry Hampton. They moved near Gould, Colorado to escape the big-city life of Walden, purchasing the 75th KOA franchise. For the next 34 years, they raised their three kids and operated the campground that filled her life with so many great friends from all over the country.
Dorothy loved the Gould community and was instrumental in organizing many Gould community events. The Turkey Fry and Christmas brunch were her favorites. Over the years she acted as surrogate mother and grandmother for the State Forest seasonal help and others in the Gould community.
For retirement, they moved the old Gould school house onto the flank of Gould Mountain and made a warm and inviting home overlooking the beauty of Owl Mountain. Visitors would always find good food and conversations filled with laughter. When altitude and harsh winters forced them off the mountain, they joined their daughter Piper in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Dorothy is survived by her son John (Niecie) Hampton, daughter Sammi (Steve) Langendorf, daughter Piper Hampton, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sister and many nieces, nephews, surrogate children, surrogate grandchildren and friends.
Per her requests, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gould Community Center.
