Fort Collins native, Donald Lee Wunsch, 72, passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, following a 14 year battle with COPD. Don was born in Fort Collins on Feb. 4, 1936, to Alex and Hilda Wunsch. He attended country grade schools and was graduated in 1955 from Fort Collins High School. It was in the 50's that Don earned the name "Barney" amongst his peers because of his high speed antics with his car. Prior to starting his own business in 1976, Don's Keyway, Don worked several jobs in Fort Collins, including Woolworth, Safeway, CSU, Hauf Brau, Oglesbee Furniture, Townhouse Restaurant and Ramada Inn. In 1974, Don married Patricia M. Romero, who also became his partner in their locksmith and engraving business. As a conscientious and timely locksmith, Don became a hero to many by unlocking their house or car, often in the middle of the night. Don is survived by his wife; one daughter, Anna husband, Richard Burt; two stepchildren, David wife, Arlene Romero, and Carolyn husband, Mark Johnson. They blessed him with 6-1/2 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Garrison wife, Margaret Wunsch, Jeanne husband, Lonnie Schulze, Alecia husband, Jim Mein, and Stephen wife, Pamela Wunsch. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-son, Michael Romero and his granddaughter, Aerial Romero. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6th at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Donations may be made to Hospice of Larimer County, who so tenderly cared for him in his last weeks. Friends may send condolences to the family at bohlenderfuneralchapel.com.
