Donald Leo Viert, 90, of Fort Collins, CO and formerly of Howell, MI passed Saturday, April 4, 2015. He was born Sept. 25, 1924 in Capac, MI to Leo and Theresa Viert.
He married Lucretia Arlene Smith of Howell, on August 27, 1949 (a marriage of 65 years). Rather than finish school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a torpedo man aboard the USS Ticonderoga and USS Boxer (Essex-class aircraft carriers) during WWII. Immediately following the invasion of Southern France while on shore duty to disarm booby traps and dispose of unexploded ordnance, he was wounded by a German sniper. He was also wounded a second time, but never spoke of it, and he gave his hearing during a naval battle. His records were lost, but as with so many veterans, he never complained. After the war, he earned a living for his family as a journeyman carpenter in Livingston County, MI. Later, he became the Maintenance Supervisor for the Hartland School System until retirement.
He retired to Fort Collins, CO where he is survived by his wife, Lucretia; their son Steven, his wife, Gretchen, and two granddaughters – Katerina and Alexandrea.
"A more honest and likeable man would be hard to find".
It would be his wish that memorial contributions be made to any veteran's assistance programs in the U.S. - SAILOR, REST YOUR OAR.
