Donald George Philp went to be with our Lord on Jan. 2, 2008, at Columbine West Care Center Hospice. Don was born to George W. and Anna L. Arnold Philp on September 24, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. He graduated in January 1943 from Mount Clemens High School and the day following graduation entered the Army Air Force. Following his commission as a second lieutenant, he served as a navigator on a B-17 until his honorable discharge in October 1945. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Betty K. Haugan, while stationed in Sioux City, Iowa. They married in Sioux City, Iowa, on Feb. 16, 1946. Following their wedding, Don and Betty moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where Don attended the University of Michigan. He graduated a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in June 1949. They made their home in Birmingham, Mich., where many lifelong friendships were established, until December 1960. Don moved the family to Colorado to accept a position with the Coors Porcelain Company. He retired from his position of vice president of engineering in 1982. Don was a principal organizer and founding member of the Plant Engineering Society of Detroit, which later expanded nationally to become the American Institute of Plant Engineers. He was a man of integrity and strong faith, who was always willing to volunteer his time and resources to the churches and communities to which he belonged. He enjoyed woodworking, fly-fishing and was the organizer of many a memorable vacation to national parks. Don is survived by his three sons, Eric Eileen of Fort Collins, Bruce Kay of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Greg Lezlie of Ault; and grandchildren, Jeffrey, Dana, Nathan, Caitlin and Erin. Don is preceded in death by his beloved wife; and two grandchildren, Catherine and Ryan. Interment at Grandview Cemetery will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peace with Christ Lutheran Church, 1412 W. Swallow Road, or Hospice of Larimer County, 7406 Colland Drive.
