Donald Andrew Griggs, 90, passed away January 9, 2010. Donald was born July 6, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fourth child of Benjamin Harrison Griggs and Eily Alexandra Geary Griggs. He grew up in the areas of Los Angeles and Hollywood, California, and attended Hollywood High School. Don joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was stationed at Lowery Air Force Base in Denver, and was deployed to the European Theatre in England and Ireland. While stationed at Lowery he met his wife-to-be Shirley Garnick. They married April 7, 1946 in Denver, and made their home in Englewood. In the early years Don worked as a transport driver, an addressograph operator for Workman's Compensation, and owned a gas station. After moving to Fort Collins in 1971, he worked for Lockman Drywall and Sinclair Oil until age 80. Don was a very involved father, always willing to help with his daughter's school, sporting, and Camp Fire Girls activities. He loved going to his grandson's sporting activities, especially the hockey trips. Don loved to fish. He and Shirley took several trips in their camper to Wyoming and Canada. He was also a very good cook, making many specialty items.
He was preceded in death by his wife, and is survived by his daughter, Sharon N. Housley and her husband, Paul, of Fort Collins and his grandson Steven P. Housley of Durango. The family wishes to thank the staff at Lemay Ave Health and Rehab. and Pathways Hospice for their loving care and support. Interment and Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery. Memorial Service will be Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 E Drake Rd. Rev. Nancy Boswell will officiate.
