Listen to Obituary
Don Russel Ewy of Gould, Colorado, died January 24, 2019 in an accident while doing maintenance on heavy equipment in Gould.
Don was born in Longmont, Colorado, on May 6, 1952, the son of Don L. Ewy and Coleen A. (Drage) Ewy. The family lived in Allenspark, Colorado, where Don learned to love the mountains and the pleasure of hard outdoor work. He attended the two-room elementary school in Allenspark and graduated from Lyons High School.
He married Ann Dunning in 1969 and they lived in Allenspark while Don worked cutting timber in the Allenspark area and in North Park. Eventually they moved to North Park where they raised three tough and resilient kids—Peter (1970), Jared (1974), and Laura (1978). All of the kids attended the North Park schools where Don and Ann were active volunteers both in the school and the community especially in the North Park Fire Department and the North Park Search and Rescue Team. He and Ann were also instrumental in establishing the Gould Community Center which is an important gathering place for community events including the annual ski scramble.
In 1993, Don successfully led the Coalition to Save the Colorado State Forest, a diverse group of dedicated folks from North Park and the Front Range, in opposition to the sale of State Forest land to a developer planning to build a massive ski area complex near Cameron Pass.
After a long struggle with cancer, Ann died in 2005.
Don married Jenifer Morrissey on November 3, 2007. Don and Jenifer worked in the woods often relying on Jenifer's ponies to limit damage to the land from heavy equipment. They were committed to sustainable forestry for the good of the land and future generations.
Don is survived by his wife, Jenifer Morrissey, son Peter (Sherry), son Jared (Sarah), daughter Laura (Dan Ehrmantraut), brother Leonard (Kim), sister Leslie (Stuart), and eight grandchildren.
Don's life will be celebrated at an informal gathering Saturday, February 2 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Diesel Trucking and Equipment, 1024 S. St. Louis Ave. in Loveland, Colorado. A potluck celebration of life will be held at the Gould Community Center in Gould at 1:00 PM on February 24. All who knew and loved Don and his family are welcome.
Remembrances may be sent to the North Park Fire Rescue Authority or the Jackson County Search and Rescue Team.
