Listen to Obituary
Dennis Walker passed away December 3rd, 2017 in Fort Collins surrounded by his family and the caring staff of Columbine West. Dennis was born in 1942 in Douglas, Arizona to Elmore and Ann (Schneider) Walker. The family owned a cattle ranch close to the Mexican border. A few years later, his brother, George (Rebecca), was born. Dennis excelled at scholarly pursuits and graduated valedictorian of The Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado. He grew up playing baseball with his dad and brother; he played baseball at Colorado College, maintaining a .500 batting average. He graduated with degrees in English and History and traveled with a college friend to North Carolina where he met his future wife, Madge Grose. They had three daughters--Debra (Robert), Melissa (Arek) and Darcey (Shane). Madge and Dennis lost a baby boy, Benjamin, soon after birth. His grandchildren include Delfino and Benjamin (Darcey), Simon and Caroline (Debra), and Amelia and Adam (Melissa). Dennis worked at the Fort Collins Post Office for 39 years as a carrier and clerk where he had many esteemed co-workers and friends on his route. He was close to his mother, Ann, and helped to care for her in her old age. Dennis loved his family and holiday gatherings—Christmas in particular--when he would encourage everyone in the family to sing Christmas carols loudly and with vigor. He loved reading books, especially mysteries, and he gardened and raised rabbits. He traveled extensively, visiting many Civil War sites (he was an excellent amateur historian of the Civil War), and he enjoyed watching movies and sports on TV. Dennis knew a lot about politics and he kept up with current events right up to the end of his life. He listened to country music and was a life-long Democrat. He was a kind and positive person who always had a joke to tell, and he made friends everywhere he went. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to any organization that researches Parkinson's disease.
Private Family Service will be held. Friends may send condolences to the family at bohlenderfuneralchapel.com.
