David M. Govan died on July 13, 2020, in Fort Collins CO, his home since August 1973.
He was born on April 18, 1930 in Hackensack, NJ and graduated from Teaneck High School in Teaneck, NJ, in June of 1948. Dad received a congressional appointment to the US Naval Academy in October of 1948 and entered with the class of 1953 in June of 1949. He fulfilled his military obligations with multiple assignments in San Diego, CA, Honolulu, HI, and Lakehurst, NJ and resigned his commission effective August of 1957.
In December, 1953, he began "22,655 days" of married life with Norma Jean Shea. Those of us without Dad's acumen for numbers will understand they shared over 61 years of marriage.
Upon leaving the military he embarked on a career as an assistant engineer with NJ Bell Telephone. In 1973, he transferred to Mountain States Telegraph and Telephone Co. in Colorado. Dad did some contract work for Anchorage telephone utility in 1983, then worked 2.5 years with a small computer company in Denver and completed his professional career with the federal government region 8 (GSA) in communications work as a communications manager. He retired August 31, 1993.
Dad was an avid reader. Other activities Dad enjoyed included coaching recreational baseball, CYO basketball, Kiwanis, and US Naval Academy Alumni Association. He also enjoyed watching all his children and grandchildren as they participated in extracurricular activities, as well as watching his favorite professional sports teams.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma, both parents and both sisters. He is survived by his 4 children, Donna, David S. (Debra), Eileen (Jim), Terry (Ed) and his 5 grandchildren, Ryan (Hannah), Katie, Zac, Mckenna and Amanda. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren, Kennedi Jo and Kamdyn as well as nieces and nephews.
