After about 10 years, they moved back to Fort Collins, where Darrell started Hicks Painting and Decorating. He worked as an independent contractor for almost twenty years. He then went to work at Colorado State University at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital as their painting maintenance technician. Following the death of his wife in 2001, he retired from his job and began to enjoy his retirement. At his 50th High School reunion, he met Betty Wicklund, who would become his Significant Other for the remainder of his life. He spent the winters in Texas with Betty Wicklund and his "Texas family" and the summers in Colorado. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margie, and his grandson, Alan Hicks.
