Dan was born in Bell, California on December 2, 1946, to Raymond Dwight Detamore and Eleanor Mae Parsons Detamore. He grew up in Woodland Hills, California and graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 1965. He was drafted into the Navy in 1966 and served In the Mediterranean for four years. After he returned, he was set up on a blind date with Nancy Plett whom he would marry on May 29, 1971, in Woodland Hills. They had one son, Kenneth R. Detamore. After 20 years in Moorpark, the family moved to Bayfield, Colorado where Dan worked for Kroeger's True Value Hardware until his retirement.

Dan enjoyed sports, especially football and baseball, fishing on any reservoir he could, and camping, one of his favorite places to camp was Yosemite National Park. Dan also enjoyed model trains. He and his son Ken spent many years building a multi-level model train set in their garage.
