Charles "Chuck" Smith, 81, of Fort Collins, went to be with the Lord at 10 a.m. April 11, 2008, at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, just 13 days before his 82nd birthday. He was born April 24, 1926, in Homewood, Ill., to Samuel B. Smith and Reta S. O'Neal Smith. He was the eldest of five children, three sisters and a brother, Elsie, Gladys, Deane and Robert. Chuck was a World War II Navy Veteran having served at Iwo Jima and Saipan. Chuck married Marietta Joyce Galligan on June 25, 1948, at North Shore Church in Chicago, Ill. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. He was a master carpenter for over 50 years. Chuck enjoyed fishing, woodworking including custom birdhouses, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed wildlife and his backyard is a certified backyard wildlife habitat. Survivors include his wife, M. Joyce Smith; three children, Susan Larry Hedges, Wade Carol and Scott Melisa Smith; six grandchildren, Bethany, Shauna, Meredith, Dane, Ashley, and Evan; and one great-granddaughter, Ali. Preceding Chuck in death are his parents; sister, Elsie; and brother, Robert. A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bohlender Funeral Chapel. Interment with military honors by the Fort Collins All Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Rosealwn Cemetery.
