Listen to Obituary
Cheryl Ann Lewan of Fort Collins, a loved mother and friend, passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday October 30th, 2022. Cheryl was born to Myra and Robert Nelson on a military base in Tachikawa Japan on January 29th, 1951. Cheryl had two younger brothers, Michael and Bruce. She was preceded in death by both parents and brothers. Cheryl is survived by her daughter Heather McDowell, son-in-law Mike McDowell, grandchildren Mira and Max McDowell of Fort Collins, and cousin Diane Roth and her husband John and their children Molly and Aiden of Golden, Colorado.
Cheryl lived in Colorado most of her life, graduating from Broomfield High School in 1969, then moving to Grand Junction to attend and graduate from Mesa State College with an Associates of Arts degree, followed by pursuit of her bachelor's degree at CSU. She married Gary Lewan and they moved to Fort Collins in 1971. Cheryl and Gary later divorced but had remained lifelong friends. Cheryl started her career working for a local type setting office in downtown Fort Collins, then worked for Hewlett Packard in the 80's and early 90's. She then retired from Advanced Energy in 2004.
Cheryl was a person of very small stature and had a kind, quiet nature to her. She was always polite, never boisterous; always tasteful and classy, never showy or loud. She was known to be gentle and compassionate. She had a big heart and loved fiercely. Everyone in her life knew how much they meant to her.
Cheryl was a master at feathering her nest and she took great pride in her home, paying attention to every detail, making it always beautiful and welcoming. Cheryl took pride in her appearance, always well put together and fashionable. Cheryl had a green thumb and never met a plant that didn't like her. Most of all, Cheryl loved her pets. She gave her entire heart to her rescue dogs and felt strongly about giving these creatures lots of love and a second chance at life.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family requests that donations are made in her name to the Larimer County Humane Society.
Cheryl's life will be celebrated on November 20th, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Garden's on Spring Creek at 2145 Centre Avenue in Fort Collins.
